Life in Egypt – one year on from the Revolution
Egypt is a land of contrasts: the lushness of the Nile region and the arid desert lands in the west; the rich elite living in gated communities in Cairo and poverty-stricken groups, trying to live and work on the city’s rubbish dumps; ancient history and modern offices; and the self-serving, power-hungry fanatics and the community-minded moderates who are trying to build a just and fair Egypt for all.
Against this backdrop of contrasts and tensions, our Partnerships Coordinator, Morag Gillies, visited Egypt last November. She shares some initial reflections:

In my brief meeting with Bishop Mouneer he spoke gravely and described the situation in the country as ‘very serious’. He was, however, encouraged by the way in which Christians were uniting in working together and praying for their ‘beloved country’. While I was there, 70,000 Egyptian Christians met in the Coptic Orthodox cave church in Moqattam, Cairo, for a twelve hour vigil to pray for their country (also broadcast across the Arab world by SAT-7).”
